On the way to our annual Hatteras vacation we picked up a pamphlet from the visitors center for the Alligator River National Wildlige Refuge. We decided to swing by on our way home and were very impressed with the amount of land and roads in the refuge. We weren't there early enough in the morning to see any bears but we saw lots of bear sign. We did the half mile hike across the swamp and boardwalk and saw a 5' alligator, 4' black snake, 3' cottonmouth (Right next to the walking path- be very aware of where you walk!) and on the boardwalk you could see where the bears claws scratched the wood when they walked across it. We also saw lots of turtles sunning themselves on fallen trees. If you like wildlife you will enjoy this.

Nice day driving the reserve looking at the scenery and wildlife. Make sure to stop and get a map. We're bringing the kayaks next time!

Wonderful place to see black bears in the wild. Insect repellent is a must in the summer as the bugs get quite large and numerous. But the spring and fall offer a great opportunity to view all sorts of wildlife in an uncrowded setting. I have seen bears and great blue herons almost every time I go, but I have also seen an alligator, snakes, deer, hawks, egrets, and several species of migratory birds at various times.

I love this place. It's quiet and beautiful. A variety of programs are offered through the park - I attended a talk about black bears who are native to the area which also included a guided drive to see them. A great place to take pictures as well.

Great canoe trails through the swamp. Lots of different trails ranging from big open water to canoe wide passeges.
